There have been folktales and stories of the Bugul Noz for generations throughout Brittany. Tales of sadness and even tales of fear.
For the Bugul Noz is a solitary being. A Being of Fae deemed so ugly by the tales and stories of the Big Folk, that he is often heard howling deep in the forest to ward people away from viewing his appearance. The very sight of the Bugul Noz is said to terrify even the bravest of humans.
There are tales of him as a protector of the forest, ‘The Shepard of the Night’, one who warns locals of the impending darkness and ushers them home to safety. There are also tales of him as malevolent, a being that wishes to cause harm rather than good.
For now, we heed these tales, both those of light and dark and invite you to make up your own mind. Is the Bugul Noz just a lonely being, who recognises his ugly appearance and wishes people to stay away? Or is he a reflection of us ‘Big Folk’ – where we all have light and dark within us, and it is our choices that deem how we are seen in the world?
